Taiwanese Government Subsidizes WiMAX, WiFi Application
August 26, 2005

MOEA's IDB (Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs) is granting NT$1.8 billion to subsidize "mobile service", "mobile learning", and "mobile life" so as to boost WiMAX and WiFi applications. They will develop relative technology and services in the second half of 2005, build a WiMAX trial ground in 2006, and set up a WiMAX test and certification lab in 2007, in an attempt to expand the coverage of WiMAX or WiFi up to 80%-90% in major cities and 30%-40% in the suburbs. This subsidy is expected to bring wireless Internet connections to at least 8 million people.

In addition to the goal of boosting WiMAX penetration among Taiwan's citizenry, one of the chief aims of this subsidy is to boost the shipment value of the Taiwanese communications industry into the trillions via the development of WiMAX equipment and services. Another major aim is to encourage the provision of WiMAX terminal and central office solutions by domestic and overseas players, which would help to further build up the various segments comprising the island's communications cluster.
